OK for all you wimps out there who are resting the girl up for winter . A few things to think about beforehand.

OIL : change the oil, your clutch plates, bearings, crank and oil seals wont thank you for sitting in dirty old toxic black stuff till the sun comes out again.

fuel tank : fil it up to the top, modern fuel goes off but lasts longer in bigger quantities, this also stops rust forming inside your tank. if you have a petrol tap on your bike, turn it off and run the engine until it stops, this empties the carbs and prevents dirt blocking jets.

tyres : check them from time to time , you dont want the pressure dropping, this can cause flat spots and wall cracking. rest your poor tyres on some rubber matting or carpet, this helps to prevent them going hard.

chain : clean the chain and coat it in thick grease to stop rust.

battery : remove the battery and store off the floor. always disconect the black before the red lead, and charge every month. or fit a multimate type charger and leave conected.

Wash : and spray some anti corrosion oil all over the bike. lube all moving parts, cables and foot rests. cover her up AND LEAVE THE RADIO AND LIGHT ON so she dont get bored.

Am i doing her a favour : by starting her up for a few minutes, NO you are causing damp inside the engine which will rust bearings and stuff. ride it or leave it..

I thought, when I saw the subject title, that you were making some sort of suggestive remark

I could do with being laid up for winter

I'd like to add that the best advice would be to buy an 07 GS500F to get you through the winter...
